Doing so helps you better understand where you are insured and where you aren’t. But, there are some events which are simply too odd to be realistically listed down at the fine print. Here are just seven of those kookier ones where claims were successfully paid out.
1. Falling Coconuts
A traveler in Sri Lanka was injured due to a coconut falling on her head and was fortunate enough to be insured when it happened. This is actually a fairly common problem in the tropical regions, which is why you frequently see de-nutted coconut trees lining the shores of resorts and hotels.
2. Buried Treasure
Two well-meaning kids in Cornwall took it on themselves to protect the video camera belonging to their own parents by putting it in the sand. They forgot where they buried it, but the insurance companies paid out just the same. You may choose to expand your household travel insurance to add your gadgets, particularly if they’re expensive enough to warrant the excess protection.
3. Rampaging Rodents
The reason? A herd of pigs ran him off the road! A local farmer affirmed his story, telling how his daughter’s guinea pigs bred and escaped to plague-like proportions.
4. Hungry Rhinos
Talking of critters, an Australian traveler in Africa volunteered to help out in a local zoo. It pays to not underestimate animals, whether you’re in the wild or at the boundaries of a zoo.
5. Fatal Attraction
One young Briton struck his nose whilst walking into a bus shelter at Athens. He maintained he was diverted by a group of girls in bikinis and, luckily for him, his insurer paid out! Sometimes it pays to be honest and straightforward in such cases, though it might be a bit problematic for spouses to use this explanation when it comes to household travel insurance.
6. Best Foot Forward
A traveler in Fiji was looking out for fishing and in his eagerness, he mistook his own foot for a fish – you can imagine what happened later! The provider in this case was gracious enough to pay for the crash, which might have been easy to dismiss as a self-inflicted injury if they’d been less reputable.
7. No-Show Snow
A woman raring to check her out brand-new skis on the piste filed for a payout from her insurance company for a lack of snow when she arrived. Some suppliers guarantee particular events throughout the trip, such as skiing or horseback riding, so it is worth reviewing the contract to find out whether you will be insured because of factors beyond your control.
While these stories above seem too strange to happen to you, it might be worth noting that they actually occurred. You will be very grateful for the protection of single or family travel insurance bundles if something just as odd happens to you!
